Tips in designing a bedroom

How do you decorate bedrooms based on the following factors:

  1. Space planning
  2. Color schemes
  3. Lightning
  4. Storage solutions
  5. Furniture pieces (materials and finishes)
  6. Flooring and walls

Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house that is often neglected since other people don’t really see it unlike other areas such as the living room and dining area. But do you know that we generally spend the most number of hours in our bedroom than the rest of the room in the house? Just think of the number of hours you spend sleeping. This is why it is important to make it comfortable and a place where you want to spend most of your time in.

  1. Always start by planning your space
Measure the bedroom and think of your lifestyle. Are you going to use your bedroom just for sleeping? Do you want a study area? Do you watch TV before you sleep or you do this in your living room? Consider how big your available space is and as much as possible minimize your furniture pieces to what’s really necessary for your daily routine. If you don’t need it, keep it out of the room. This will maximize your space, serve its primary purpose well and make room spacious. If you have ample space, a small corner of the room can be utilized by having a seating area. This vignette can be your new favorite space for reading or even just lounging.

  2. When choosing furniture, first invest on a good quality bed and mattress
This is the most important furniture in this room… one can remove all other pieces but as long as the bed is there, the bedroom will serve its purpose. A good bed and mattress will determine if you have a sound sleep and wake up with a smile the next morning or the opposite. Choose a bed frame that is sturdy and doesn’t squeak over time. You might want to go for a softer finish on exposed areas of bed such as upholstered headboard and sidings so you don’t bump yourself on those corners.

  3. Better to go safe on your wall hue and play colors of your beddings
If you are not sure of what color to put on your room, go for auf white, beige or neutral colors for the walls. Now that you have a clean palette, play with the colors of your lines once a week or once every two weeks. Putting linens on your bed is like dressing up a person. This will reflect your personality as well.

  4. Use warm light to create a more cozy effect
This tip is the simplest amongst the list but definitely has a big effect in the ambience of the room. You can use white light on your study table lamp and use it whenever you read or work. Avoid lighting fixture on the center of the bedroom or worse, on top of your bed. This is a thing of the past that really needs to be stopped. It distracts you when you’re in bed and can irritate your eyes. Go for cove lighting, pin-light on corners, wall lamps, accent headboard lighting and floor lamps or table lamps.

  5. Keep your bedroom clutter free
Even the most beautiful room will lose its appeal when covered with clutter. De-clutter your room by using storage boxes and organize your items. Storage space doesn’t necessarily mean huge cabinets, beds with storage under is one good space saver. You can also conceal your cabinets by making accent walls as your cabinet doors. This will serve a 2 in 1 purpose.

  6. Choose a flooring that feels and looks warm
Wooden floors are ideal for bedrooms. Tiles are better for living and dining rooms but if you have a tiled floor, you can add area rugs to make it warm and remove that cold feeling.

  7. Accessorize
Often times neglected but furnishings such as lamps can make or break a room. It can be a design statement or a focal point of the room if one makes the right choice. As little as it may seem accessories give character to the room. It makes the room more personal.

What’s your secret to designing bedrooms that really promote rest and relaxation?

When I design bedrooms, my secret is to touch all the 5 senses to be able to promote rest and relaxation

  • Sense of sight — make it aesthetically pleasing and clutter free
  • Sense of touch — comfy bed with nice linens with decent number of thread counts (the higher the number of thread counts, the better), shag carpet or plush throws… nice to feel and touch especially with the right temperature and good air circulation around the room.
  • Sense of smell — scented candles, reed diffusers, aromatherapy, etc… A room that smells good feels clean and cozy.
  • Sense of hearing — this can add to the overall ambiance of your room and can make one sound asleep
  • Sense of taste — When all 4 senses are touched, you also satisfy the sense of taste, besides, you can always offer a breakfast in bed with your special someone.
